Rehearsals

Rehearsals are every Tuesday evening during school term times, from 7:30 to 9:30pm. They begin with gentle warm-ups and vocal exercises, a vital part of the training. Singers drink water throughout rehearsals and wear loose, comfortable clothing. The singers move around a lot, mixing with other singers, going to performing positions, and moving (in a cool and sexy way) while we sing. In the two short hours we meet together there are always a lot of songs to be worked up and not a moment is wasted. There are always enormous challenges coming up, and the atmosphere is boisterous, extraordinary, laughing, and focussed, everyone pulling together to make the most astonishing sound – deep joy!

Sally Brown, the Musical Director, leads rehearsals and conducts the choir. She researches, arranges and sometimes composes the songs, teaching repertoire and vocal technique.

Choir Invisible is an a capella, or unaccompanied, choir, the most exciting, challenging sort of singing, with close harmonies and no safety net. Everything is taught 'by ear' in the time-honoured, traditional way, through listening and repetition. Songs absorbed like this seem to disappear from your mind immediately after learning, only to reappear in their entirety the moment someone reminds you of the first note. It means that when you are ninety, you may not know what day of the week it is, but you will remember all three verses of a song in Swahili you sang with Choir Invisible.

The Venue

The choir is privileged to have access to perhaps the most beautiful rehearsal venue of any choir in Britain, meeting in the marble hall of the turreted Harlaxton Manor, just off the A1 in Lincolnshire. This extraordinary building is the British campus of the University of Evansville.
